Location: The Stables Bar, Perth
Vibe: Cramped cheese-scented flirt-fest (with potential)
Last week, my wingwoman Hayley and I decided to dip our toes back into the dating pool (read: fling ourselves into the deep end without floaties) at a Thursday Singles Night hosted upstairs at The Stables.
We were nervous. Like “should we just fake a medical emergency and leave?” nervous.
Naturally, we kicked things off with a cheeky prosecco to calm the nerves and scan the room like spies on a mission.
Look, I’ll be honest—I’m not a huge fan of The Stables at the best of times (no shade, just truth). The upstairs space felt a little tight, and I swear it smelled faintly of smelly cheese. If that’s your thing, enjoy! For me? 🧀 No thanks.
The crowd was buzzing though—plenty of people and a wide age range, which was a nice surprise. Singles in their 20s, 30s, 40s+, all mingling awkwardly but beautifully under one slightly sweaty roof.
We sat at a little table tucked around the corner—great for a catch-up, terrible for looking “approachable and open to flirty conversation.” Oops. Rookie move.
And while we saw a few people with bingo cards (cute!), we couldn’t for the life of us figure out where they came from. So instead, we free-styled the evening with… not much mingling and some world-class people-watching.
To be fair, the lack of icebreakers didn’t help—and neither did our stand-offish body language (unintentional, we swear!). But hey, 2025 is our year to mingle, and next time we’ll:
No sparks were flying, so we made an early escape to Deadbeat Bar—which turned out to be way more our style. Bigger space, good tunes, better vibe. Also: I was just wildly curious to see if it lived up to the hype. (Spoiler: It did.)

Final Word:
We didn’t find love, but we did find Deadbeat Bar and a renewed plan for next time.
Note to self: mingle more, cheese less, and never underestimate the power of good seating.
